Welch girl - Jessie Gladys

Jessie was our Grandmother. She was born on the 20th August 1893 and we actually have a birth certificate to prove this. She only got married when she was 41. This may have been due to her mother and father both having passed away. Jessie is the person who took most of the photographs.

Even though she married extremely late in life she managed to have two children. These were Rosemary and Max. Jessie had an extremely hard life once she was married.

From being a little princess, (she was barely 5 foot.), married life saw her dealing with poverty and a never do well husband. He was extremely gregarious, and liked nothing better than to spend evenings in pubs, where he would play the piano and drink too much. He had a wheat thrasher that he would drive from farm to farm. He would also use this thrasher as his means of transport into the towns near the farms on which he was working.
Victor died when she was 51 years old. She was married for 11 years and 1 month. She was left penniless except for a car. The story goes that both of them had a horrid flu and were in a state of unconsciousness. My grandfather died and my grandmother knew, and even knew what the transport looked like that came and fetched his body. I have seen that his sister signed the death certificates.

Once she was a widow, she and her children were taken to Bertha's house. Jessie lasted another two years and then she too died. She was only 55 years old. Her children were only 11 and 13. Rosemary and Max were taken in by Bertha. I do not believe it was a particularly happy house. Both Rosemary and Max got married extremely young. Both were quite fragile. This may have been from having aged parents. The other thing that may have contributed to their fragility was the fact that the used to play on asbestos mines.

Here are a whole lot of photos of Jessie.

Victor did look very charming.

Here is a letter where she is ranting a bit. Sharing just for fun

No Gredr(?) has the power to make me cower.
For God is my eejoege(?) at
strength.
Takes me out of the darkness
of sin.
Into the eternal lights.
Oh Lord of my strength and
delight.
Show me the ways
O, Lord.     Oh  to all words
base.

We map out, or Gamble our
lives untold when

or else you'll die. Then we
get on.  Through the good and

Bad. Kora, poor misguided
mortals.

God made the world and
all that is therein. He also made us in spirit
and beauty.
Then came Jesus and
was nailed to the cross.
To open our blind eyes,
and what! have we done?
and what are we going
to do?
Just sit on our tails,
& look in front of us.yes!
What a lot of ungrateful
lazy self pitying swines we
are.

we cause a lot of mischief
to come upon us, and the
world; and give God an end-
          less lot of trouble.
All through idleness and selfish -
- ness

She has achieved descendants. You would think with so many children there would be a huge number of descendant, but the reality is that they have been very few, with many of the siblings not achieving children and then others never becoming grandparents. At this point Jessie has achieved Great-great-great grandparent status. Her genetics has been passed on. She is also remembered and sometimes that is all that can be asked.
