I have found out a whole lot of information about my ancestor James Welch's immediate family. His brother married well and is the Harrismith connection, More about him later.
Finding information about James Welch, the one that is my great grandfather as well as the one that was my great great grand father, is like trying to see the rock that caused the ripples on a body of water.
Yesterday I found this
and today I found this:
Ridgeway,Welch,15 May-1876,19-May-1876,At the Berea Road church by the Rev J
Reynolds,"Henry Ridgeway of Durban to - Mary youngest daughter of the late
Mr James Welch, Umzinto''
And we know the undaunted Emma Roger Welch, married Donald Joyner in Umzinto in 1862. I did have a question mark as to how she could have met somebody so far away from where I knew she was. James going there to work would be a good reason.
So now we move ever closer in trying to see when James Welch died.
If we have a wedding in 1876, and can hopefully make the assumption that she was at least 16 then she should have been born in 1860.
We know that Emma got married on the first day of 1862. With this logic we can see that James died no earlier that 1859 and no later that 1861.
I am sure that there is a photo with Mary written on it. Until then I have allocated the above photo to be Mary. Sh is a pretty little girl.
There are now a whole lot of questions.
Will his death certificate be in the same church as where she got married.?
Is there a birth certificate for Mary?
Is Mary on Joyner's time line.... these are all interesting question.
The other one is, who was Donald Joyner related to? Was William his father or grandfather? Found the answer to this one, William was his brother. We come from a whole long line of being the brother or sister to the important one. This make hunting down the info so much more fun. This probably resulted in a few anti-social characteristics.
This is actually fun. I have trained for the last 35 years to find bugs in computer code, and this feels very much like that.
